Looking for the best unflavored protein powder?

Drink Wholesome makes the best unflavored egg white protein powder with 100% real foods. Compared to other protein supplements, it is not only better for you, but also better tasting.

4 reasons to choose Drink Wholesome

1. Drink Wholesome is additive-free. Most protein powders are full of heavily processed food additives. Although ingredients like these are not necessarily bad for you in small quantities, they can add up quickly, especially if you drink a protein shake every day. At higher quantities, food additives can cause side effects.

First of all, because food additives are heavily processed and look nothing like real foods, we can have trouble digesting them. As a result, they sit in our guts for longer and ferment. Fermentation produces gas, which can cause bloating, cramps, and stomach pain. Gas also slows colonic transit and can lead to constipation. In the long term, food additives can disrupt regulatory pathways in the intestine and cause the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and systemic inflammatory disorders.

As a rule of thumb, food additives are ingredients that you cannot pronounce. Not sure what to look for? Here is a list of the most common food additives in protein powder:

acacia gum, acesulfame potassium, artificial flavors, aspartame, carrageenan, cellulose gum, dextrin, dextrose, erythritol, gellan gum, guar gum, gum arabic, inulin, locust bean gum, “natural” flavors*, maltodextrin, rice syrup solids, soy lecithin, silica, sucralose, sunflower lecithin, xanthan gum, xylitol *Natural flavors are NOT natural.

You may have noticed that this list includes several artificial sweeteners. Some artificial sweeteners may be bad for the stomach because they alter the composition of our gut microbiota, the collection of microorganisms that help us digest food. This can lead to serious stomach pain and widespread inflammation. Other artificial sweeteners, especially sugar alcohols like xylitol, can cause diarrhea because they draw water into the gut. Avoid artificial sweeteners whenever possible.

2. Drink Wholesome is dairy-free. Dairy-based protein powders can cause side effects like bloating, constipation, cramps, diarrhea, gas, and nausea, especially for people with lactose intolerance or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Common dairy-based proteins include casein and whey, which are byproducts of cheese and yogurt production.

Casein and whey protein can also cause acne. Dairy indirectly stimulates insulin production, which regulates sebum production. Sebum, an oily, waxy substance produced by your body’s sebaceous glands, can clog your pores and cause pimples. Dairy can also hinder your ability to process blood sugar efficiently, which can cause inflammation, especially in your skin. If casein or whey protein powder upsets your stomach or causes you to breakout, switch to Drink Wholesome.

3. Drink Wholesome is NOT made with protein concentrates or isolates. Protein concentrates and isolates are foods chemically or mechanically stripped of everything but the protein. Unlike real foods, they are missing the nutrients that make food taste good, which is why many protein shakes have a chalky aftertaste. Protein concentrates and isolates are listed on the ingredient list as “pea protein,” for example, as opposed to “peas.”

Instead of protein concentrates or isolates, we use egg whites. Egg whites are simply broken, pasteurized, and dried before becoming protein powder. Unlike protein concentrates and isolates, they have a great flavor and aftertaste. The egg whites that we use are particularly delicious because they were broken, pasteurized, and dried less than twenty four hours from when they were laid. The result is a flavor without the saltiness or sulfur “eggy” notes typical of eggs.

4. Drink Wholesome is NOT made with artificial sweeteners or stevia. Unlike sugar, artificial sweeteners and stevia activate bitter taste receptors (known as TAS2Rs) as well as sweet taste receptors. This is why many protein shakes have a bitter (metallic) aftertaste.

Instead of artificial sweeteners or stevia, we use a natural sweetener called monk fruit. Monk fruit – also known as luo han guo – is a melon-like fruit native to Southeast Asia. Monk fruit sweetener is created by removing the seeds and skin of the fruit, crushing the fruit, and collecting the juice, which is then dried into a concentrated powder. As far as low/zero calorie sweeteners go, monk fruit is the most natural and best tasting. It actually tastes like sugar!

7 reviews for unflavored

  1. Thomas Heinz

I’m a big fan of Drink Wholesome and I’ve tried and like all of the flavors, so I thought I would give the unflavored a try. It really doesn’t taste like much at all. When mixed with banana and peanut butter, it’s like it’s not even there. 90 calories for 20 grams of protein is impressive too. Really good product.

  2. Michelle Yoast

Really small serving size which is nice. Didn’t realize it didn’t come with scoop. Not a big deal really. Mixes so well. Barely tastes like anything. Only complaint is the size of the bag – will have to order more soon!

  3. Trevor McCullen

Really good stuff. I barely notice it. I tried it on it’s own (with water), and it was actually pretty good.

  4. Katherine Ryan

I have been making peanut butter protein balls with this. They come out great every time. Not at all chalky or gritty. Easy five stars!!

  5. Tina Hoppel

This stuff rocks!!! I throw a scoop in my smoothie in the morning. I like knowing that it’s just egg whites.

  6. Noelle Du

I add it to my greens smoothies. It’s perfect. The bag is a bit hard to close though.

  7. Holly

Tastes great and good for diabetics.
