Most protein powders contain food additives. Although food additives are not necessarily bad for you in small quantities, they can add up quickly, especially if you drink a protein shake every day. At higher quantities, food additives can cause nasty side effects. 

For instance, because highly processed food additives look nothing like real foods, we have trouble digesting them. As a result, the trillions of bacteria in our guts have more time to eat and more time to release gas. This gas can cause bloating and stomach pain.

Most protein powders also contain protein isolates, foods stripped of everything but the protein. Unlike real foods, protein isolates are missing the healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and other nutrients that make food taste good. They have a chalky aftertaste.

Protein isolates are listed on the ingredient list as “whey protein,” “pea protein,” and “soy protein,” as opposed to “milk,” “peas,” and “soybeans.”

Why egg whites?

Egg whites, as a source of protein, have a lot going for them. The bioavailability of the protein in eggs is second only to that of whey protein. Bioavailability is a measurement of how efficiently your body uses a specific type of dietary protein. In essence, the higher its bioavailability, the more efficiently a protein source is used by the body and the more bang you get for your nutritional buck!

Eggs are also a complete source of essential branched-chain amino acids, which means that they contain all of the amino acids that the body needs, but cannot produce on its own. This makes eggs one of the best ways to boost your protein intake.

The egg whites we use were broken, pasteurized, and dried less than twenty four hours from when they were laid. The result is a flavor without the saltiness or sulfur “eggy” notes typical of dried egg whites.

    I’m a big fan of Drink Wholesome and I’ve tried and like all of the flavors, so I thought I would give the unflavored a try. It really doesn’t taste like much at all. When mixed with banana and peanut butter, it’s like it’s not even there. 90 calories for 20 grams of protein is impressive too. Really good product.

    Really small serving size which is nice. Didn’t realize it didn’t come with scoop. Not a big deal really. Mixes so well. Barely tastes like anything. Only complaint is the size of the bag – will have to order more soon!
