Because It's Easy to Digest

Why Is Our Meal Replacement Powder Good for Sensitive Stomachs?

There are 3 types of meal replacement powder ingredients that are notorious for causing digestive issues:

1) food additives, 2) dairy-based proteins, and 3) ultra-processed protein concentrates and isolates.

99% of meal replacement powders contain one or more of these problematic ingredients, whereas Drink Wholesome doesn’t.

In fact, there’s nothing in Drink Wholesome that might upset your stomach.

Just look at the short list of simple ingredients!

It's Additive-Free

Our Meal Replacement Powder doesn’t contain any food additives whatsoever.

This is good news for sensitive stomachs because certain additives – like artificial sweeteners, emulsifiers, and thickeners – are notorious for causing digestive issues (FASEB J, 2025).

There are many reasons why food additives might upset your stomach, and individual tolerances vary.

That said, most food additives are ultra-processed, meaning they look nothing like real food.

This could make them hard to break down and absorb, contributing to side effects like bloating, diarrhea, and stomach pain.

Certain food additives have also been shown to alter the composition of your gut microbiome – the collection of microorganisms living in your gut (Eur J Nutr, 2020).

These shifts, known as gut dysbiosis, might contribute to chronic digestive issues (J Appl Microbiol, 2020).

Gut dysbiosis can cause a self-reinforcing cascade of problems, including leaky gut and poor nutrient absorption (Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr, 2022; Microorganisms, 2023).

Much of this research is still emerging, so more studies are needed to clarify these relationships.\

But because meal replacement powder is something you consume regularly, even small amounts of potentially harmful ingredients are worth taking seriously.

It's Dairy-Free

Our Meal Replacement Powder is free from dairy-based proteins like whey and casein.

Whey and casein contain lactose – a sugar most people can’t fully digest – but you might be sensitive even if you’re not lactose intolerant (Am J Clin Nutr, 2019).

For starters, some caseins release a compound during digestion that has been linked to digestive issues (Adv Nutr, 2017).

Casein also forms a gel-like substance in your stomach that slows down digestion (Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr, 2023).

For some, slow digestion can contribute to bloating and other digestive side effects.

It’s Minimally-Processed

Our Meal Replacement Powder is made from minimally-processed protein sources, not ultra-processed protein concentrates or isolates.

Protein concentrates and isolates have been mechanically and/or chemically stripped of everything but the protein.

This includes fiber, enzymes, and other natural digestive aids that help you break them down.

You therefore might not digest concentrates and isolates in the same way that you do real foods (J Agric Food Chem, 2023; Foods, 2022).

This could lead to gut fermentation, which has been linked to gut inflammation and chronic digestive issues (Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr, 2017; Mol Nutr Food Res, 2024).

One study even suggests the consumption of concentrates and isolates could alter the composition of your gut microbiome (Nutrients, 2018).

For the record, protein concentrates and isolates are generally well-tolerated.

But they might be problematic for people with sensitive stomachs.

That’s why we use protein sources like egg whites and almonds, which our customers find to be easier to break down and absorb.

99% experience no digestive issues with our Meal Replacement Powder.

Verified Purchase I like Drink Wholesome because it uses simple, real ingredients I can actually recognize. There are no artificial sweeteners or fillers, and it feels more like real food than a typical protein drink. It’s easy on my stomach and fits naturally into my daily routine.

Verified Purchase What drew us to Drink Wholesome is your emphasis on simple, transparent ingredients and products that are easier on digestion. Due to our own nutritional needs, including IBS sensitivities, caused by a battle with stage 3 cancer, we are very mindful about ingredient quality and formulations, and your approach appears to be a far better fit for us than many of the more complex “all-in-one” blends currently available. Your products are also easy to store, travel with, and incorporate into a practical, preparedness-minded lifestyle, something our community values highly. As a couple in our sixties, we are particularly drawn to products that support health, simplicity, and convenience without unnecessary additives. IBS

Verified Purchase Works for IBS. The coconut flavor is strong though. I like coconut, but if someone wasn’t a fan, I could see that as a no go. IBS
