FAQ

What makes drink wholesome gut-friendly?

Unlike 99% of protein supplements, my protein powders and meal replacements are ADDITIVE-FREE, DAIRY-FREE, and made with REAL FOODS, not protein isolates. For this reason, they are perfect for people with gut issues and sensitive stomachs, as well as for people just looking to boost their protein intake without the processing and added junk.

Although not necessarily bad for you in small quantities, food additives can add up if you drink a protein shake every day, and cause side effects like bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas, and stomach pain. In the long term, food additives can also disrupt regulatory pathways in the intestine, and trigger the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other systemic inflammatory disorders.

Dairy-based proteins like whey, which are byproducts of cheese and yogurt production, are known to cause digestive issues, especially for people with lactose intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Protein isolates are foods mechanically and/or chemically stripped of everything but the protein. They are listed as “pea protein,” for example, as opposed to “peas.” Eating processed foods like these can alter the composition of your gut microbiome (the collection of organisms that live in your gut). This is worrisome because your gut does more than just help you to digest food; it protects against pathogens, educates your immune system, and affects directly or indirectly most of your physiologic functions. Disruptions to the gut microbiome have therefore been linked to the development of many chronic diseases.

What makes drink wholesome better tasting?

Unlike 99% of protein supplements, my gut-friendly protein powders and meal replacements are made with real foods, not protein isolates. Protein isolates have been stripped of the nutrients that make food taste good, and are the reason why most protein shakes and meal replacements taste like chalk.

My protein powders and gut-friendly meal replacements are also sweetened with monk fruit. Monk fruit – also known as luo han guo – is a melon-like fruit native to Southeast Asia. Monk fruit sweetener is made by removing the seeds and skin, crushing the fruit, and collecting the juice, which is dried into a concentrated powder. Thanks to non-caloric compounds called mogrosides, it is sweet like sugar. Artificial sweeteners and stevia, on the other hand, have an unpleasant, bitter aftertaste.

Why did you create drink wholesome?

“As a college athlete, I was sick of protein supplements that upset my stomach, so I made my own with simple ingredients. Upon graduating, I realized that I was not the only person who had trouble digesting protein supplements, so I decided to share my recipes with the world. Today, my protein powders, which are proudly handmade in the USA, have helped thousands of people with sensitive stomachs and gut issues safely boost their protein intake. Order samples to see if my egg white protein powders, vegan almond protein powders, meal replacement powders, and dairy-free milk powders are right for you.” -Jack
