Non Chalky Protein Powder
Why Are Protein Powders Chalky?
Most protein powders are made with protein concentrates and isolates, which have been mechanically and/or chemically stripped of everything but the protein.
It follows that unlike whole foods, protein concentrates and isolates do not contain many (if any) fats or carbs.
Fats coat the tongue and enhance flavors, and carbs dissolve easily, creating pleasant, syrupy texture.
Proteins, on the other hand, tend to stay suspended in liquid, which leads to a pasty aftertaste.
Extensive processing can also denature protein molecules, contributing to a chalky mouthfeel.
Note that plant-based protein powders tend to be more chalky than animal-based protein powders.
This is in part because they tend to have lower solubility, meaning they do not dissolve as easily.
How Do I Make Protein Powder Less Chalky?
If you are committed to finishing your chalky protein powder, here are a few ways you can mask the chalkiness:
- Mix it with milk instead of water. Milk, especially high fat cow’s milk, can make protein powder more palatable.
- Blend it. Blending your protein powder or mixing it with an Electric Mixer or Shaker Bottle (with a whisk) breaks down clumps and creates a smoother consistency.
- Add a scoop of nut butter. The fats in nut butter provide a creamy mouthfeel that can mask chalkiness.
Note that adding more liquid to your protein shake can also help make protein powder less chalky.
And if that does not work, consider adding your protein powder to pancakes or baked goods.
What Is the Best Non-Chalky Protein Powder?
As you just learned, some types of protein powder tend to be less chalky than others.
Animal-based protein powders like whey and egg white, for example, tend to have a better texture than plant-based protein powders like hemp and pea.
That said, texture can vary considerably from brand to brand depending on how the protein was processed and which, if any, ingredients were added to the formulation.
Added ingredients like inulin and psyllium husk for instance, can make protein powders chalky because they are naturally insoluble.
As a rule of thumb, picking an animal-based protein powder with few added ingredients is the best way to avoid a chalky aftertaste.
It is worth noting that many protein powders contain food additives designed to reduce chalkiness.
Although this may seem like a good thing, regularly consuming xanthan gum, sunflower lecithin, and other ultra-processed additives can cause painful side effects and even long term-health problems.
As a rule of thumb, if you cannot find it in nature or make it at home, it is probably a food additive.

Frequently asked questions
Who is Drink Wholesome for?
Drink Wholesome makes minimally-processed protein powder for sensitive stomachs. Because it’s made from a short list of simple ingredients, it’s also a great option for anyone who wants to avoid artificial and ultra-processed ingredients – including kids, seniors, and moms.
Why is Drink Wholesome easy to digest?
No Dairy
Drink Wholesome is made without whey and casein, which contain lactose, a sugar most people can’t fully digest. Dairy-based proteins, especially casein, also form a gel-like substance in your stomach, which can upset sensitive stomachs.
No Additives
Drink Wholesome is made without ultra-processed food additives. Regularly eating artificial sweeteners, emulsifiers, thickeners, and other additives can cause digestive issues and even long-term gut health problems.
Whole Food Protein
Drink Wholesome is made from whole food protein sources like almonds and egg whites. Unlike ultra-processed protein concentrates and isolates, which have been stripped of fiber, enzymes, and other natural digestive aids, whole foods are easy to break down and absorb.
Collagen vs egg white vs almond protein powder?
We make three types of minimally-processed Protein Powder for sensitive stomachs: Collagen Protein Powder, Egg White Protein Powder, and Vegan Almond Protein Powder. As long as you eat a balanced diet (get protein from a variety of sources), any type of protein powder can help you meet your protein needs. So just pick the type that best suits your personal preferences.
