Protein Powder Without Stevia

Is Stevia Good for You?

If a protein powder does not contain artificial sweeteners, chances are high that it contains stevia, an inexpensive, sugar-free sweetener.

Stevia is over 100 times sweeter than table sugar and considered by many to be a natural alternative to artificial sweeteners like sucralose.

That said, stevia may not be as natural as you think.

Stevia is usually extracted from the stevia rebaudiana plant using chemicals like ethanol and methyl alcohol.

This, some argue, makes it no more natural than the artificial sweeteners that it seeks to replace.

In fact, a class action lawsuit filed in California reached a $6.1 million settlement because it was ruled that a company falsely labeled and advertised its stevia sweeteners as “natural.”

To be fair, this does not mean that stevia is necessarily bad for you, but it does imply that you should think twice before making it a regular part of your diet.

And if you are considering choosing a sugar substitute like stevia to help with weight management, keep in mind that there is only a modest relationship between weight loss and the consumption of sugar substitutes (Am J Clin Nutr, 2014).

In fact people who consume sugar substitutes can actually gain weight because sugar substitutes can cause sugar cravings (CMAJ, 2017; Cell Metab, 2016).

People also tend to indulge themselves after having “saved calories” with their diet soda, sugar-free ice cream, etc.

In short, if you are trying to lose weight, you might as well just eat real sugar (in moderation of course).

What Is the Best Protein Powder Without Stevia?

We sweeten most of our Protein Powders with monk fruit sweetener, which comes from a melon-like fruit native to Southeast Asia.

Our monk fruit sweetener is made by removing the seeds and skin, crushing the fruit, and collecting the juice, which is dried into a powder.

It is over 200 times sweeter than sugar, but sugar-free thanks to compounds called mogrosides.

Monk fruit, unlike stevia, is also sweet like sugar!

Stevia activates sweet and bitter taste receptors (J Agric Food Chem, 2016), which is one of the reasons why more and more people are considering alternatives like monk fruit.

Note that although it is relatively new to the commercial market, monk fruit sweetener has been safely used in Asian cuisine for centuries and has no known side effects.

Small randomized trials have also shown that monk fruit does not negatively impact blood sugar or insulin levels (Eur J Clin Nutr, 2017).

As you can see, we also sweeten some of our Limited Edition Protein Powders with maple sugar.

Maple sugar is one of the most natural (least processed) sugars.

It also has a number of health benefits.

For instance, maple sugar has a lower glycemic index than table sugar, which means it has a smaller impact on your blood sugar levels.

Moreover, unlike refined sugar, maple sugar has not been stripped of its nutrients.

It therefore contains minerals and antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation.

Finally, maple sugar is delicious!

It has a rich maple flavor and aroma just like maple syrup, with a sweet aftertaste.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Drink Wholesome for?

Drink Wholesome makes minimally-processed protein powder for sensitive stomachs. Because our protein powder is additive, dairy, and gluten-free and made from a short list of simple ingredients, it’s a great option for people with lactose intolerance, IBS, GERD, and SIBO.

Why is Drink Wholesome easy to digest?

No Dairy

Drink Wholesome is made without whey and casein, which often contain lactose, a sugar most people can’t fully digest. Some caseins also release a bioactive peptide during digestion that has been linked to digestive issues in some individuals.

No Additives

Drink Wholesome is made without food additives. Regularly eating certain emulsifiers, thickeners, and other ultra-processed additives can contribute to gut dysbiosis, which has been linked to chronic digestive issues.

Whole Food Protein

Other protein powders are made from ultra-processed protein concentrates and isolates, which have been mechanically and/or chemically stripped of non-protein components that promote digestion. Drink Wholesome, on the other hand, is made from whole food protein sources, which might be more gut-friendly.

Collagen vs egg white vs almond protein powder?

We make three types of minimally-processed Protein Powder for sensitive stomachs: Collagen Protein Powder, Egg White Protein Powder, and Vegan Almond Protein Powder. As long as you eat a balanced diet, any type of protein powder can help you meet your protein needs. So just pick the type that best suits your personal preferences.
