Give your Jello a protein boost

Why make protein Jello?

Jello is a classic, sometimes nostalgic dessert. Kids and adults alike love its delightful texture, which is so fun and satisfying to eat. Jello is also super easy to make and low in calories. The latter makes it a popular dessert choice among those trying to lose weight.

Despite being low in calories, Jello is not actually a healthy dessert. One serving of Jello contains 18 grams of sugar. Eating this much sugar at once can cause blood sugar spikes, which are the last thing you want if you are trying to maintain a healthy weight.

When blood sugar levels spike, your body releases insulin. Insulin’s primary role is to transport sugar from the bloodstream into cells to be used for energy or stored for later use. If there is an excess of sugar, insulin tends to promote the storage of this excess sugar as fat.

Jello does make sugar-free versions of its popular flavors, but these versions contain aspartame and acesulfame potassium. Artificial sweeteners like these have been shown to increase cravings for sugary and sweet foods, leading to overeating and feelings of withdrawal. If you are looking to shed a few pounds, you might be better off opting for real sugar.

If only there were a way to have your cake and eat it too…this is where protein Jello comes to the rescue. Adding protein to Jello improves blood sugar control, turning an unhealthy dessert into a healthy one. It also increases satiety, making you feel full for longer, and increases thermogenesis, or your metabolic rate and energy expenditure. Combined, these benefits make protein Jello a magic bullet for weight loss.

Turning Jello into a high protein desert is easy – all you need unflavored protein powder. Not all protein powders are created equal, however, so keep reading.

Why use drink wholesome?

For starters, our unflavored protein powder is made from a whole food protein source, not protein concentrates and isolates. The latter have been stripped of everything but the protein, giving them an unpleasant chalky aftertaste. Nearly all other unflavored protein powders are made from protein concentrates and/or isolates.

If you cannot eat eggs, unflavored collagen protein powder is another good addition to Jello. Collagen does not have the same nutrition benefits as egg whites, but is almost flavorless.

Now, without further ado, here is the best high protein Jello recipe. Enjoy!
