Protein sludge is a simple, creamy dessert that can be made in minutes. It is a great way to satisfy your sugar cravings without compromising your health goals, and is one of my favorite late-night snacks. Pro tip: If you pop protein sludge in the freezer for a few minutes, it becomes a healthy, high protein ice cream.

One of my best things about protein sludge is how customizable it is. First of all, you can use either yogurt or dairy-free milk as your base. I prefer yogurt because it makes for creamier sludge, but dairy-free milk works well too. Second, you can use either a frozen banana or an avocado. The banana adds more sweetness and the avocado adds more creaminess. Finally, it is easy to get creative with sludge by adding things like nuts and fruit. I sometimes go crazy with ingredients like chia seeds, coconut flakes, and cacao chips. 

I recommend using flavored protein powder to make protein sludge, but if you prefer or only have unflavored protein powder, you can always add flavorings like cocoa powder or vanilla extract. In a hurry? You can make protein sludge with nothing but a bowl and a spoon. I recommend using a blender, however, because it gives the sludge a much better consistency.

Other protein sludge recipes recommend using guar or xanthan gum to thicken the recipe. I highly recommend NOT using ingredients like these because they are known to cause gastrointestinal (GI) side effects. Instead, I recommend using a (frozen) banana. Obviously, if you use a banana, you will need a blender.

Why drink wholesome?

This recipe was made with drink wholesome chocolate protein powder. It is perfect for adding to recipes. Most protein powders are not because they are made with protein concentrates and isolates, foods stripped of everything but the protein. 

Unlike real foods, protein concentrates and isolates are missing the nutrients that make food taste good. In other words, they turn delicious recipes into hockey pucks. With enough trial and error, you can make these protein powders work, but how much chalky protein sludge are you willing to make? 

Another reason why drink wholesome is perfect for baking is that it is sweetened with monk fruit. Monk fruit, also known as lo han guo, is a small, melon-like round fruit native to Southeast Asia. Monk fruit sweetener is made by removing the seeds and skin, crushing the fruit, and collecting the juice, which is then dried into a powder. 

We use monk fruit sweetener because it has a sweetness similar to that of sugar. Artificial sweeteners and stevia, on the other hand, are either way too sweet, or have a bitter aftertaste. Order samples to experience the monk fruit sweetness for yourself.

Now without further ado, here is the best protein sludge recipe. 

Ingredients:

-1/2 cup drink wholesome chocolate protein powder 

-1 cup Greek yogurt 

-1 frozen banana or 1 ripe avocado

OR

-1/2 cup drink wholesome chocolate protein powder 

-1 cup dairy-free milk

-1 frozen banana or 1 ripe avocado

Instructions:

Add all of the ingredients to a blender and process them until smooth. Pour the mixture into a bowl and place the bowl in the freezer for 15 minutes. Top with your favorite toppings. Some of my favorite combinations include almonds and blueberries, or chocolate chips and peanut butter.
