What Is Clear Protein Powder?

Clear protein powder dissolves completely in water.

It is perfect for individuals who want an easy way to add protein to their diet, as it can be mixed with practically anything.

Note that some clear protein powders contain added flavors and sweeteners.

If you want to add clear protein powder to your morning coffee, look for an unflavored, unsweetened option.

It is also worth noting that clear protein powders can only be made from one of two different protein sources: collagen or whey protein isolate.

Whey Protein Isolate

Whey protein isolate is a concentrated form of whey protein – a byproduct of cheese and yogurt making.

Some whey protein isolates have had virtually all of the lactose (sugar) mechanically and/or chemically removed, and dissolve almost entirely in water as a result.

Collagen

Collagen is a protein found in the skin, bones, and connective tissue of animals.

Our Collagen Protein Powder, for example, is made from very small pieces of cowhide.

When mixed with water, collagen protein powder dissolves completely.

Whey vs Collagen

The type of clear protein powder you choose will depend on your personal dietary needs and preferences.

Some people prefer whey because it is a complete protein, where as collagen is not.

A complete protein contains all of the essential amino acids, which are amino acids that your body needs, but cannot produce on its own.

This might seem important, but 99% of people easily meet 100% of their essential amino acid needs (J Nutr, 2023).

And excess amino acids are either excreted as waste, used for energy, or stored as fat.

In other words, that some proteins are complete whereas others are not is irrelevant for anyone eating a balanced diet – getting protein from a variety of sources.

Other people prefer collagen because whey contains lactose, a sugar most adults cannot fully digest (StatPearls, 2023).

Although most of the lactose has been removed, there is still enough to cause digestive issues for someone with lactose intolerance.

Are There Clear Vegan Protein Powders?

There are no vegan clear protein powders at this time.

The closest you are going to get to a clear plant-based protein powder is soy protein isolate.

When mixed with water, soy protein powder is by no means clear, but it does have a neutral flavor and texture compared to most vegan protein powders.

How Do I Add Clear Protein Powder to My Diet?

Some clear protein powders come in flavors like lemonade, and can be mixed with just water to make a high protein drink.

For someone who does not like creamy protein shakes, or classic flavors like chocolate and vanilla, these clear protein powders are a great option.

Other clear protein powders are unflavored and unsweetened, which means they can be added to almost any recipe or dish to increase the protein content.

I like to add our Unflavored Collagen Protein Powder to everything from smoothies to pancake batter.

Unflavored clear protein powders can also be added to hot drinks like coffee.

If you choose to use them this way, I recommend mixing with a handheld electric mixer to help them dissolve; stirring with just a spoon can leave clumps.

Why Should I Use Clear Protein Powder?

Protein powder is a dietary supplement, meaning it should only be used to fill in gaps in your diet.

It should not be used to replace other sources of dietary protein.

Whenever possible, you should try to get your protein from high protein foods like eggs, dairy, fish, legumes, meat, nuts, and seeds.

For some people, especially those with dietary restrictions, eating enough protein this way can be challenging, however.

This is where adding protein powder to your diet can help.

And clear protein powder is a great choice because of how versatile it is.

As you just learned, unflavored, clear protein powder can be added to practically anything without changing the flavor or texture much at all.

What Is the Best Clear Protein Powder?

Not all clear protein powders are created equal.

Many options, especially flavored ones, contain added emulsifiers, thickeners, and other additives that can cause painful side effects and even long-term health issues.

For example, regularly eating emulsifiers, thickeners, artificial sweeteners, and other ultra-processed additives can alter the composition and function of your gut microbiome (North Clin Istanb, 2019).

These shifts, known gut dysbiosis, contribute to a wide range of chronic diseases, including diabetes and even certain cancers (J Exp Med, 2019).

Gut dysbiosis is so problematic because it causes a cascade of problems, including intestinal permeability, systemic inflammation, impaired nutrient absorption, and reduced short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production.

As a rule of thumb, if you could not find an ingredient in nature or make it at home, it is a food additive.

Note that of all the food additives to avoid, artificial sweeteners are at the top of the list.

Several studies have shown that they can increase cravings toward sugary and sweet foods, which can lead to binging and feelings of withdrawal (Yale J Biol Med, 2010).

So if you are trying to lose weight, you are probably better off just eating sugar.

Research has also associated artificial sweeteners with a higher risk of glucose intolerance, which is a precursor for pre-diabetes and diabetes (Nature, 2014).

High Protein Blueberry Pancakes

Ingredients
  • ¼ cup Drink Wholesome
  • ⅓ cup flour
  • 2 egg whites
  • ¼ cup plant milk
  • 1 tbsp nut butter
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 cup blueberries
Instructions

In a blender, combine the egg whites, milk, ¼ cup blueberries, and almond butter. Pour the mixture into a small mixing bowl and add the protein powder and flour. Whisk until smooth. Pour ⅓ cup batter onto a heated and greased (or non-stick) pan to form pancakes. Cook each side for 2-3 minutes. This recipe makes 4-5 pancakes. Then, in a small saucepan, heat ¾ cup blueberries and the maple syrup over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 8 minutes. Plate the pancakes and spoon blueberry jam on top.
