Protein Powder for Wegovy

Is Protein Powder Good for Individuals on Wegovy?

Wegovy is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called semaglutides, which are GLP-1 receptor agonists (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists).

It mimics a natural hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels, insulin secretion, and appetite.

Wegovy is prescribed primarily to help with chronic weight management in adults and adolescents with obesity.

It is important to note that Wegovy is indicated and studied as an adjunct to lifestyle and dietary changes, not as monotherapy.

In other words, Wegovy is most effective when administered in combination with dietary and lifestyle changes.

One such change is increasing the percentage of your calories that come from protein.

A high protein diet has advantages for individuals trying to lose weight because it improves blood glucose management, insulin sensitivity, and satiety (Adv Nutr, 2021).

Eating enough protein is also important for maintaining muscle mass while on Wegovy.

If your protein intake is too low, your body starts to break down muscle for energy instead fat.

In fact, studies have shown that semaglutide treatment can result in significant reductions in muscle mass (Obes Rev, 2023).

And if you cannot meet 100% of your protein needs by eating foods like eggs and fish, then adding a protein powder to your diet might be a good idea.

Protein powder can be mixed with just water to make a protein shake, or added to smoothies, oatmeal, and other recipes to fill in gaps in your diet.

What Is the Best Wegovy Protein Shake?

Not all protein supplements are created equal.

Unfortunately, many contain ingredients known to cause painful digestive issues as well as gut health problems that can make weight loss harder.

Among these ingredients are food additives and protein concentrates and isolates.

avoid food additives

🚫 Avoid Food Additives

Regularly eating emulsifiers, thickeners, and other additives can upset your stomach.

This matters because semaglutide use is associated with digestive side effects (Gastroenterology, 2022), including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, particularly during dose escalation.

Additives can also alter the composition of your gut microbiome (Microorganisms, 2020), which diminishes the efficacy of diabetic medications (Biomedicines, 2022) and impairs weight loss (Gut, 2018) through several mechanisms.

For example, your gut microbiome modulates the release of hunger-controlling hormones such as ghrelin and insulin.

And gut dysbiosis can lead to higher concentrations of these hormones (N Engl J Med, 2024), which can inhibit hormone signaling and alter energy metabolism.

⚠️ Here is a list of the most common food additives in protein supplements:

  • acacia fiber
  • acacia gum
  • acesulfame potassium
  • artificial flavors
  • ascorbic acid
  • aspartame
  • calcium carbonate
  • carrageenan
  • cellulose gum
  • dextrin
  • dicalcium phosphate
  • dipotassium phosphate
  • erythritol
  • gellan gum
  • guar gum
  • gum arabic
  • inulin
  • locust bean gum
  • maltitol
  • maltodextrin
  • mono- and diglycerides
  • ‘natural’ flavors
  • rice bran extract
  • rice dextrin
  • rice hulls
  • rosemary extract
  • silica
  • silicon dioxide
  • sodium alginate
  • soluble corn fiber
  • sorbitol
  • soy lecithin
  • sucralose
  • sunflower lecithin
  • tocopherols
  • tricalcium phosphate
  • xanthan gum
  • xylitol
  • zinc oxide

Basically, if you could not find an ingredient in nature or make it at home, it should not be in your protein supplement.

avoid ultra processing

🚫 Avoid Protein Concentrates and Isolates

You should also avoid protein concentrates and isolates.

Most protein supplements are made from protein concentrates and isolates, which have been mechanically and/or chemically stripped of everything but the protein.

This includes the enzymes, fiber, and other natural digestive aids that help your gut break them down.

You therefore do not digest them in the same way that you do whole foods, which can affect everything from satiety to gut health.

In fact, studies show that regularly eating protein concentrates and isolates can disrupt your gut microbiome (Nutrients, 2018) and cause the formation of toxic byproducts in your gut (Poult Sci, 2024).

So, it is probably a good idea to choose whole food protein sources when buying protein supplements, especially if you are struggling with type 2 diabetes or obesity.

How Much Protein Should I Eat On Wegovy?

There is no specific protein intake requirement for people on Wegovy.

But ensuring adequate protein intake, typically around 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, is recommended to preserve muscle mass during weight loss.

For many individuals, this can easily amount to well over 100 grams of protein per day, which is a lot of protein!

  • Breakfast: 2 eggs – 12 gram protein
  • Lunch: 4 ounces chicken breast – 32 grams protein
  • Snack: ¼ cup almonds – 7 grams protein
  • Dinner: 4 ounces salmon – 23 grams protein
  • Total: 74 grams protein

Remember that your ideal protein intake depends on your body weight, activity level, etc.
