Because It's Easy to Digest

Why Is Our Egg White + Collagen Protein Powder Safe for Sensitive Stomachs?

There are 3 types of protein powder ingredients that are notorious for causing digestive issues.

They are 1) food additives, 2) dairy-based proteins, and 3) ultra-processed protein concentrates and isolates.

99% of protein powders contain one or more of these problematic ingredients, whereas Drink Wholesome doesn’t.

In fact, there’s nothing in Drink Wholesome you couldn’t find in nature.

Just look at the short list of simple ingredients!

It's Additive-Free

Our Egg White + Collagen Protein Powder doesn’t contain any food additives whatsoever.

This is good news for sensitive stomachs because certain additives, especially artificial sweeteners, emulsifiers, and thickeners, could cause digestive issues (FASEB J, 2025).

There are many reasons why food additives might upset your stomach, and individual tolerances vary.

That said, most food additives are ultra-processed, meaning they look nothing like whole foods.

This could make them hard to digest for some, contributing to side effects like bloating, diarrhea, and stomach pain.

Certain food additives, especially artificial sweeteners, could also alter the composition and function of your gut microbiome (Eur J Nutr, 2020).

These shifts, known as gut dysbiosis, contribute to many chronic digestive issues (J Appl Microbiol, 2020).

Dysbiosis is so problematic because it causes intestinal permeability, systemic inflammation, impaired nutrient absorption (Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr, 2022; Microorganisms, 2023).

To be fair, little research has investigated the long-term effects of regular food additive consumption on digestive health.

Avoiding food additives certainly can’t hurt, however, especially if you have a sensitive stomach.

It's Dairy-Free

Our Egg White + Collagen Protein Powder is free from dairy-based proteins like whey and casein.

The main problem with whey and casein is they contain lactose, a sugar most people can’t fully digest (Am J Clin Nutr, 2019), but you might be sensitive even if you’re not lactose intolerant.

For starters, some caseins release a bioactive peptide during digestion that has been linked to digestive issues (Adv Nutr, 2017).

Casein also forms a gel-like substance in your stomach that slows down digestion (Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr, 2023).

For some individuals – particularly those with cow’s milk protein allergy/intolerance – slow digestion can contribute to bloating and other side effects.

It's Made from Whole Foods

Our Egg White + Collagen Protein Powder is made from whole food protein sources, not ultra-processed protein concentrates or isolates.

Protein concentrates and isolates have been mechanically and/or chemically stripped of everything but the protein.

This includes the fiber, enzymes, and other natural digestive aids that help you break them down.

You therefore don’t digest protein concentrates and isolates in the same way that you do whole foods (J Agric Food Chem, 2023; Foods, 2022).

For some individuals, this could lead to their fermentation in your gut, which has been linked to inflammation and digestive issues (Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr, 2017; Mol Nutr Food Res, 2024).

One study even shows the consumption of concentrates and isolates could alter the composition of your gut microbiome (Nutrients, 2018).

For the record, protein concentrates and isolates are generally well-tolerated.

But their impact on digestive health is variable, which means they could be problematic for some individuals with sensitive stomachs.

It follows that instead of using protein concentrates or isolates, I use whole foods like egg whites and almonds, which are easy to break down and absorb.

Our customers experience few to no digestive issues with our Egg White + Collagen Protein Powder as a result.

Verified Purchase I just wanted to say how much we truly love your products. As a celiac family, clean ingredients aren’t just a preference — they’re a must. So many protein and nutrition products out there are full of gums, additives, and things that make our stomachs so unhappy, but your simple-ingredient approach is such a breath of fresh air. 🙌✨ I love knowing exactly what I’m putting into my body (and my kids’!), and your formulas feel safe, gentle, and genuinely nourishing. It’s hard to find a brand that cares about digestive health the way you do — and it makes such a difference for families like ours.

Verified Purchase Honestly, it just tastes amazing! I’ve always been really picky with protein supplements, because most of them tastes horrible and can have a gritty or chalky texture. Drinking Wholesome has none of that. I’ve only tried the Maple Cinnamon, but I’m excited to try the other flavors.
