Semaglutide Protein Powder

Is Protein Powder Good for Individuals on Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists.

It mimics a natural hormone that helps you regulate your blood sugar levels, insulin secretion, and appetite.

Semaglutide is prescribed primarily for:

  • Type 2 diabetes management: The semaglutide Ozempic, for example, is used to help lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity.
  • Obesity treatment: The semaglutide Wegovy, a higher-dose semaglutide, is used to reduce appetite, slow digestion, and curb cravings.

Keep in mind that studies show that semaglutide is most effective when paired with other lifestyle and dietary changes.

One such change is increasing the percentage of your calories that come from protein.

A high protein diet has advantages for both diabetics and individuals trying to lose weight because it improves blood glucose management, insulin sensitivity, and satiety.

Eating enough protein is also important for maintaining muscle mass while on semaglutide.

If your protein intake is too low, your body might break down muscle for energy instead fat.

In fact, studies have shown that semaglutide treatment can result in significant reductions in muscle mass.

It is important to note that you should try to get as much protein as you can from foods like eggs, fish, and meat.

If reaching your protein goals this way is challenging, however, then adding a protein powder to your diet might be a good idea.

This is especially true for individuals with busy schedules or dietary restrictions.

How Much Protein Should I Eat on Semaglutide?

There is no specific protein intake requirement for patients taking semaglutide.

But ensuring adequate protein intake, typically around 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, is recommended to help preserve muscle mass during weight loss.

For many individuals, this can easily amount to well over 100 grams of protein per day, which is a lot of protein!

As you can see below, even if you protein with every meal, you might not reach your protein goals, or even meet your basic protein needs.

  • Breakfast: 2 eggs – 12 gram protein
  • Lunch: 4 ounces chicken breast – 32 grams protein
  • Snack: ¼ cup almonds – 7 grams protein
  • Dinner: 4 ounces salmon – 23 grams protein
  • Total: 74 grams protein

Remember that your ideal protein intake depends on your body weight, activity level, etc.

What Is the Best Semaglutide Protein Powder?

Not all protein supplements are created equal.

Unfortunately, many are made from ingredients known to cause painful digestive issues and even long-term health problems.

Among these ingredients are food additives and protein concentrates and isolates.

Avoid Food Additives

Regularly eating emulsifiers, thickeners, and other additives can upset your stomach.

This matters because semaglutide is already associated with digestive side effects, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, particularly during dose escalation.

Additives can also alter the composition of your gut microbiome, which both diminishes the efficacy of diabetic medications and impairs weight loss.

For example, your gut microbiome modulates the release of hunger-controlling hormones such as ghrelin and insulin.

And gut dysbiosis has been linked to higher concentrations of these hormones, which can inhibit hormone signaling and alter energy metabolism in a way that makes losing weight harder.

Here is a list of the most common food additives in protein supplements:

  • acacia fiber
  • acacia gum
  • acesulfame potassium
  • artificial flavors
  • ascorbic acid
  • aspartame
  • calcium carbonate
  • carrageenan
  • cellulose gum
  • dextrin
  • dicalcium phosphate
  • dipotassium phosphate
  • erythritol
  • gellan gum
  • guar gum
  • gum arabic
  • inulin
  • locust bean gum
  • maltitol
  • maltodextrin
  • mono- and diglycerides
  • ‘natural’ flavors
  • rice bran extract
  • rice dextrin
  • rice hulls
  • rosemary extract
  • silica
  • silicon dioxide
  • sodium alginate
  • soluble corn fiber
  • sorbitol
  • soy lecithin
  • sucralose
  • sunflower lecithin
  • tocopherols
  • tricalcium phosphate
  • xanthan gum
  • xylitol
  • zinc oxide

Basically, if you could not find an ingredient in nature or make it at home, it should not be in your protein powder.

Avoid Protein Concentrates and Isolates

You should also avoid protein concentrates and isolates.

Most protein supplements are made from one or both of these ingredients, which have been mechanically and/or chemically stripped of everything but the protein.

This includes the enzymes, fiber, and other natural digestive aids that help your gut break them down.

You therefore do not digest them in the same way that you do whole foods, which can affect everything from satiety to gut health.

In fact, studies show that regularly eating protein concentrates and isolates can disrupt your gut microbiome and cause the formation of toxic byproducts in your gut.

Pending further research, you should err on the side of caution and choose protein supplements made from whole food protein sources, especially if you are struggling with Type 2 diabetes or obesity.

Verified Purchase I can’t say I love protein powder, but it has helped me gain weight and has NOT upset my stomach even once. I have a fun combination of histamine intolerance, fructose intolerance, and low fodmap, so the venn diagram of food that works for me can be pretty small at times.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Drink Wholesome for?

Drink Wholesome is the best protein powder for sensitive stomachs. Because it’s made from a short list of simple ingredients, it’s also a great option for anyone who wants to avoid artificial and ultra-processed ingredients – including kids, seniors, and moms.

Why is Drink Wholesome easy to digest?

No Dairy

Drink Wholesome is made without whey and casein, which contain lactose, a sugar most people can’t fully digest. Dairy-based proteins, especially casein, also form a gel-like substance in your stomach, which can upset sensitive stomachs.

No Additives

Drink Wholesome is made without food additives. Regularly eating artificial sweeteners, emulsifiers, thickeners, and other additives can cause digestive issues and even long-term gut health problems.

Whole Food Protein

Drink Wholesome is made from whole food protein sources like almonds and egg whites. Unlike ultra-processed protein concentrates and isolates, which have been stripped of fiber, enzymes, and other natural digestive aids, whole foods are easy to break down and absorb.

Collagen vs egg white vs almond protein powder?

We make three types of Protein Powder for sensitive stomachs: Collagen Protein Powder, Egg White Protein Powder, and Vegan Almond Protein Powder. As long as you eat a balanced diet (get protein from a variety of sources), any type of protein powder can help you meet your protein needs.
