Yes, protein powder can meaningfully support body recomposition, though it is a tool, not a silver bullet.

Body recomposition is the process of simultaneously losing fat and gaining muscle.

It depends heavily on adequate protein intake to:

  • Preserve and build muscle while in a calorie deficit
  • Support muscle building after resistance training (lifting weights)
  • Keep you full for longer, thereby curbing cravings and overeating

Digesting protein also increases thermogenesis, or your metabolic rate and energy expenditure.

That said, the thermogenic benefits of protein are modest – nowhere near enough to offset the additional calories.

So if you simply add protein powder to your diet without making other dietary or lifestyle changes, you might create a calorie surplus, which could lead to weight gain.

One could argue that because certain protein sources are slower-digesting than others, they are more filling.

One could also argue that because certain protein sources have more essential amino acids, particularly leucine, they are better for muscle-building.

But satiety over a full day tends to equalize, and a balanced diet should give you 100% of your essential amino acids, so the type of protein powder you choose does not really matter.

In other words, unless you have unique dietary needs, meeting your total daily protein intake is far more important than the protein source.

Ingredients do matter, however, especially when it comes to digestive health.

Many people, particularly those with sensitive stomachs, report that emulsifiers, thickeners, and other ultra-processed food additives cause digestive issues like bloating and diarrhea.

High Protein Blueberry Pancakes

Ingredients
  • ¼ cup Drink Wholesome
  • ⅓ cup flour
  • 2 egg whites
  • ¼ cup plant milk
  • 1 tbsp nut butter
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 cup blueberries
Instructions

In a blender, combine the egg whites, milk, ¼ cup blueberries, and almond butter. Pour the mixture into a small mixing bowl and add the protein powder and flour. Whisk until smooth. Pour ⅓ cup batter onto a heated and greased (or non-stick) pan to form pancakes. Cook each side for 2-3 minutes. This recipe makes 4-5 pancakes. Then, in a small saucepan, heat ¾ cup blueberries and the maple syrup over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 8 minutes. Plate the pancakes and spoon blueberry jam on top.
