Non Gritty Protein Powder
Why Are Protein Powders Gritty?
One of the reasons why your protein powder might taste gritty is that it was not mixed properly.
If you mix protein powder with just a spoon, for example, you are going to be drinking clumps.
Mixing protein powder with a blender, Shaker Bottle or Electric Mixer is the best way to reduce grit.
What you mix your protein powder with can also help.
Mixing with milk, as opposed to water, creates a creamier texture.
The fat in milk coats particles in the protein powder, reducing the gritty mouthfeel.
Some protein powders, especially plant-based protein powders, have a gritty texture because they have large particles.
Large particles have a smaller specific surface area (surface area ÷ mass) than small particles and therefore take longer to dissolve.
Think about how long it would take to dissolve a sugar cube in water versus how long it would take to dissolve and an equal amount of granular sugar.
A sugar cube would dissolve slower because the combined surface area of all of the sugar granules is much greater than the surface area of the sugar cube.
More surface area means more contact with the water molecules, which allows the granular sugar to dissolve more quickly.
Another reason why some protein powders have a gritty texture is high insoluble fiber content.
Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water, so the more insoluble fiber a protein powder contains, the more that it will taste like dirt.
Plants contain insoluble fiber, which means plant-based protein powders tend to contain more insoluble fiber than animal-based protein powders.
Many animal-based protein powders contain added plant-based ingredients, however, which can contribute insoluble fiber.
It is important to note that protein powder manufacturers often add gums and emulsifiers to their product to mask the grittiness.
You want to steer clear of products made with ingredients like these.

What Is the Best Non Gritty Protein Powder?
Some types of protein powder tend to be less gritty than others. Animal-based protein powders like whey and egg white, for example, tend to have a better texture than plant-based protein powders like hemp and pea.
That said, texture can also vary considerably from brand to brand depending on how the protein was processed and what, if any, ingredients were added to the formulation.
Added ingredients like inulin, psyllium husk, and chia seeds, for instance, can make protein powders gritty because they are naturally insoluble.
Some natural sweeteners like coconut sugar can also contribute to a grainy texture.
As a rule of thumb, picking an animal-based protein powder with low fiber and few added ingredients is the best way to avoid grit.
As you just learned, many protein powders contain additives intended to reduce grittiness.
Although this may seem like a good thing, regularly consuming xanthan gum, sunflower lecithin, and other ultra-processed additives can cause painful side effects and even long term-health problems.
As a rule of thumb, if you cannot find it in nature or make it at home, it is probably a food additive.

Frequently asked questions
Who is Drink Wholesome for?
Drink Wholesome makes minimally-processed protein powder for sensitive stomachs. Because our protein powder is additive, dairy, and gluten-free and made from a short list of simple ingredients, it’s a great option for people with lactose intolerance, IBS, GERD, and SIBO.
Why is Drink Wholesome easy to digest?
No Dairy
Drink Wholesome is made without whey and casein, which often contain lactose, a sugar most people can’t fully digest. Some caseins also release a bioactive peptide during digestion that has been linked to digestive issues in some individuals.
No Additives
Drink Wholesome is made without food additives. Regularly eating certain emulsifiers, thickeners, and other ultra-processed additives can contribute to gut dysbiosis, which has been linked to chronic digestive issues.
Whole Food Protein
Other protein powders are made from ultra-processed protein concentrates and isolates, which have been mechanically and/or chemically stripped of non-protein components that promote digestion. Drink Wholesome, on the other hand, is made from whole food protein sources, which might be more gut-friendly.
Collagen vs egg white vs almond protein powder?
We make three types of minimally-processed Protein Powder for sensitive stomachs: Collagen Protein Powder, Egg White Protein Powder, and Vegan Almond Protein Powder. As long as you eat a balanced diet, any type of protein powder can help you meet your protein needs. So just pick the type that best suits your personal preferences.
