Yes, protein powder can cause heartburn in some people.

Heartburn is a burning feeling in your chest or throat that happens when stomach acid flows backward into your esophagus.

Many things can cause or contribute to heartburn, but what you eat plays a major role.

  • Some foods trigger heartburn by slowing down digestion.
  • Some foods trigger heartburn by relaxing your esophageal sphincter – the muscle that keeps stomach acid from flowing backward.
  • Some foods trigger heartburn by increasing the amount of acid your stomach produces.

Avoiding or limiting these trigger foods is key, especially if you have acid reflux or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

You can use an elimination diet to determine which foods are the most problematic for you.

Many people experience heartburn after drinking protein shakes or consuming protein powder.

Usually, this has nothing to do with the type or amount of protein itself.

Instead, protein supplements often trigger heartburn because they contain ingredients that are hard to digest.

Consuming too much protein powder at once can also cause heartburn.

Many protein powders contain one or more ultra-processed food additives, including emulsifiers, thickeners, and flavors. 

These ingredients, because they look nothing like real food, tend to be hard to break down and absorb.

This can lead to the overproduction of stomach acid.

It can also feed your gut bacteria, which release gas as they eat.

Too much intestinal gas is a problem because it puts pressure on the stomach, pushing stomach acid into the esophagus.

Dairy-based proteins like whey and casein, although not a problem for everyone, can cause digestive issues too.

This is usually because they contain lactose – a sugar many individuals with sensitive stomachs cannot fully digest.

But you might be sensitive to dairy-based proteins even if you are not lactose intolerant.

For starters, the digestion of some caseins releases a bioactive peptide that has been linked to digestive issues (Adv Nutr, 2017).

Casein also forms a gel-like substance in your stomach that slows down digestion (Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr, 2023).

For sensitive individuals, particularly true for those with cow’s milk protein allergy or intolerance, slower digestion can contribute to bloating, constipation, and other side effects.

🚫 Avoid Protein Concentrates and Isolates

If you have a sensitive stomach, you might also want to avoid protein concentrates and isolates.

Most protein supplements are made from one or both of these ultra-processed protein sources, which have been mechanically and/or chemically stripped of everything but the protein.

This includes the enzymes, fiber, and other natural digestive aids that help you break them down.

You therefore do not digest them in the same way that you do whole foods, which could affect your gut health.

For example, one study shows that regularly consuming protein concentrates and isolates might disrupt your gut microbiome (Nutrients, 2018).

Another study shows that it could cause the formation of toxic byproducts in your gut (Mol Nutr Food Res, 2024).

Although further research is needed, individuals with sensitive stomachs can play it safe by choosing protein supplements made from minimally-processed protein sources like egg whites and almonds.

High Protein Blueberry Pancakes

Ingredients
  • ¼ cup Drink Wholesome
  • ⅓ cup flour
  • 2 egg whites
  • ¼ cup plant milk
  • 1 tbsp nut butter
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 cup blueberries
Instructions

In a blender, combine the egg whites, milk, ¼ cup blueberries, and almond butter. Pour the mixture into a small mixing bowl and add the protein powder and flour. Whisk until smooth. Pour ⅓ cup batter onto a heated and greased (or non-stick) pan to form pancakes. Cook each side for 2-3 minutes. This recipe makes 4-5 pancakes. Then, in a small saucepan, heat ¾ cup blueberries and the maple syrup over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 8 minutes. Plate the pancakes and spoon blueberry jam on top.
