Are You Wondering How to Make Protein Powder Less Gritty
📌 Overview and Key Takeaways
Are you wondering how to make protein powder less gritty?
This is a Certified Nutrition Coach’s guide on how to improve the texture of your protein powder.
How to Make Protein Powder Less Gritty
Why Are Some Protein Powders Gritty?
Some protein powders, especially seed-based (hemp, pumpkin, chia, etc.) protein powders, tend to have a gritty texture because they consist of large particles.
Large particles have a smaller specific surface area than small particles and therefore take longer to dissolve.
Another reason why some protein powders have a gritty texture is that they are high in insoluble fiber.
Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water, so the more insoluble fiber a protein powder contains, the grittier it will be.
All plants contain insoluble fiber, which is why plant-based protein powders tend to be the most gritty.
5 Ways to Make Protein Powder Less Gritty
Here are 5 ways to make your protein powder less gritty:
- Use a blender. Mixing protein powder in a blender is the best way to reduce grit. For the best results, blend for 30-60 seconds on high.
- Break up clumps. If you don’t have a blender, mix with an Electric Mixer or Shaker Bottle. This will break up clumps and improve mix-ability.
- Mix it with milk. Mixing with milk, as opposed to water, can help improve the texture.
- Add nut butter or yogurt. High fat ingredients like nut butter and yogurt provide a creamy mouthfeel.
- Add it to pancakes or baked goods. Incorporating your protein powder into recipes can help mask the grittiness.
Note that some types of protein powder just taste better than others.
Animal-based protein powders like whey and egg white, for example, tend to have a better texture than plant-based protein powders like hemp and pea.
That said, texture can also vary considerably from brand to brand depending on how the protein was processed and which, if any, ingredients were added to the formulation.
Also note that many protein powder companies use food additives to reduce grittiness.
Although this may seem like a good thing, regularly consuming emulsifiers, thickeners, and other processed additives might not be healthy.
In fact, evidence suggests that a diet high in ingredients like these is associated with increased risk of multiple adverse health outcomes, including mortality, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and even mental health disorders (BMJ, 2024).
For this reason, I recommend avoiding protein powders with ultra-processed additives.

Frequently asked questions
Who Is Drink Wholesome for?
Drink Wholesome makes protein powder for sensitive stomachs, GERD, IBS, and other gut issues. It’s suitable for most food sensitivities, including lactose intolerance, and won’t cause side effects like bloating, constipation, and reflux.
Why Is Drink Wholesome Good for Sensitive Stomachs?
Drink Wholesome is the best protein powder for sensitive stomachs because it’s additive, dairy, and gluten-free. It’s also made from minimally-processed protein sources like egg whites and almonds. Other protein powders are made from ultra-processed protein concentrates and isolates, which look nothing like real food.
What’s the Difference Between Protein Powder and Meal Replacement Powder?
Drink Wholesome makes gut-friendly Protein Powders and Meal Replacement Powders. Protein powder is high in protein and low in everything else, whereas meal replacement powder contains fats, carbs, fiber, and protein because it’s intended to replace the nutritional value of a balanced meal.
What’s the Difference Between Almond, Collagen, and Egg White Protein?
We make three types of stomach-friendly Protein Powder: Collagen Protein Powder, Egg White Protein Powder, and Vegan Almond Protein Powder. As long as you get protein from a variety of sources, any type of protein can help you meet your total daily protein needs. In other words, for someone with a balanced diet, there is no advantage to consuming one type of protein over another. Order Samples to see which type you like the most.
