This might be why altered gut microbiome patterns have been associated with many chronic diseases, though research is still needed to understand the relationship (Nutr Rev, 2025).
Taking care of your gut, specifically your gut microbiome, should therefore be a priority.
Before you start chugging kombucha, however, you need to understand what gut health is really all about.
What Are Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Postbiotics?
The human gut is complex and made up of many different parts and processes, including probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics.
These terms have become buzzwords in recent years, so I thought I should take the time to define them.
Probiotics
Probiotics are bacteria and yeasts that live in your gut.
The most common are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria.
You can get probiotics from supplements and foods prepared by bacterial fermentation like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, tempeh, and kimchi.
Although the evidence is promising, more research is needed on the health benefits of probiotics, that is, the scientific community still disagrees about what the actual benefits are (Gastroenterology, 2020).
It also disagrees about which strains of bacteria are beneficial.
Some researchers even warn about possible negative effects of probiotics and call for caution and strict regulation (Food Chem Toxicol, 2019)
This is in part because a growing number of food and supplement companies fortify their products with probiotics to make them “gut-friendly.”
Prebiotics
Prebiotics are foods that feed your gut bacteria, helping to create a healthy gut microbiome.
They are found in high fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Some food and supplement companies also add prebiotics to their products.
But instead of using nourishing, whole food sources of prebiotic fiber, they often use cheap, ultra-processed ingredients.
Some added prebiotic fibers might improve gut health for certain individuals, but for those with sensitive digestion, they can cause bloating and discomfort.
Postbiotics
Postbiotics are the bioactive compounds that probiotics (bacteria) produce when they consume prebiotics (fiber).
Although postbiotics are the waste products of probiotic bacteria, they offer various health benefits to your body.
For instance, postbiotics include vitamins, amino acids, and antimicrobial peptides that slow the growth of harmful bacteria.
In most cases, you should be able to get all the probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics you need from a balanced diet.
But if you do decide to supplement, keep in mind that it is hard to predict the appropriate dose or type without testing under the guidance of a trained healthcare professional.
In short, just because a meal replacement contains probiotics, prebiotics, and/or postbiotics does not make it gut healthy.
These added ingredients could improve digestion, but they could also just be a window dressing.

When it comes to gut health, picking the right ingredients is super important.
Meal replacements are something you consume regularly, if not every day, so small amounts of problematic ingredients can add up.
And many meal replacements contain ingredients known to cause painful digestive side effects and even long-term gut health problems.
Among these ingredients are food additives, dairy-based proteins, and protein concentrates and isolates.
🚫 Avoid Food Additives
Regularly eating certain emulsifiers, thickeners, and other ultra-processed additives might alter the composition and function of your gut microbiome (North Clin Istanb, 2020).
These shifts, known as gut dysbiosis, have been linked to the development of a number of chronic digestive issues (JGH Open, 2021).

🚫 Avoid Dairy-Based Proteins
Dairy-based proteins like whey and casein, although not a problem for everyone, can cause gut issues too.
This is usually because they contain lactose – a sugar many individuals with sensitive guts cannot fully digest.
But you might be sensitive to dairy-based proteins even if you are not lactose intolerant.
For starters, the digestion of some caseins releases a bioactive peptide that has been linked to digestive issues (Adv Nutr, 2017).
Casein also forms a gel-like substance in your stomach that slows down digestion (Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr, 2023).
For sensitive individuals, particularly true for those with cow’s milk protein allergy or intolerance, slower digestion can contribute to bloating, constipation, and other side effects.
🚫 Avoid Protein Concentrates and Isolates
If you have a sensitive gut, you might also want to avoid protein concentrates and isolates.
Most meal replacements contain one or both of these ultra-processed protein sources, which have been mechanically and/or chemically stripped of everything but the protein.
This includes the enzymes, fiber, and other natural digestive aids that help you break them down.
You therefore do not digest them in the same way that you do whole foods, which could affect your gut health.
For example, one study shows that regularly consuming protein concentrates and isolates might disrupt your gut microbiome (Nutrients, 2018).
Another study shows that it could cause the formation of toxic byproducts in your gut (Mol Nutr Food Res, 2024).
Although further research is needed, individuals with sensitive guts can play it safe by choosing meal replacements made from minimally-processed protein sources like egg whites and almonds.
They are more gut-friendly.

Ingredients
- ¼ cup Drink Wholesome
- ⅓ cup flour
- 2 egg whites
- ¼ cup plant milk
- 1 tbsp nut butter
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 cup blueberries
Instructions
In a blender, combine the egg whites, milk, ¼ cup blueberries, and almond butter. Pour the mixture into a small mixing bowl and add the protein powder and flour. Whisk until smooth. Pour ⅓ cup batter onto a heated and greased (or non-stick) pan to form pancakes. Cook each side for 2-3 minutes. This recipe makes 4-5 pancakes. Then, in a small saucepan, heat ¾ cup blueberries and the maple syrup over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 8 minutes. Plate the pancakes and spoon blueberry jam on top.
