A gut-friendly mocha protein powder.
5 simple ingredients: egg whites, coconut, cocoa, coffee monk fruit.
3 reasons why it is easy to digest.

1. Our mocha egg white protein powder is additive-free.
Our mocha protein powder is additive-free. Most protein powders, on the other hand, are full of food additives. Although not necessarily bad for you in small quantities, additives can add up quickly (especially if you drink a protein shake every day) and cause gastrointestinal (GI) side effects like bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas, and stomach pain. This is because food additives are hard to digest, and sit in your gut for longer than food should, which gives your gut bacteria more time to eat. As they eat, these bacteria produce gas, which causes bloating and stomach pain. Gas also slows colonic transit (the amount of time it takes food to travel through the colon), and can lead to constipation. In the long term, food additives can disrupt regulatory pathways in the intestine, which can result in the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and systemic inflammatory disorders.
When buying unflavored protein powder, one ingredient to avoid in particular is artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners are among the most harmful food additives in the long term as they alter the composition of your gut microbiota (the collection of microorganisms that help you digest food). This can lead to serious, chronic GI problems, widespread inflammation, and permanent damage to the gut microbiome. Some sweeteners, especially sugar alcohols like xylitol, are also poorly absorbed by the gut (meaning they feed those hungry gut bacteria), and cause diarrhea because they draw water into your intestine. Now you finally have something to blame for those post-protein shake trips to the bathroom!
Here is a list of the most common food additives in protein powder:
acacia gum, acesulfame potassium, artificial flavors, aspartame, carob bean gum, carrageenan, cellulose gum, dextrin, dextrose, erythritol, gellan gum, guar gum, gum arabic, inulin, locust bean gum, “natural” flavors, maltodextrin, rice syrup solids, soy lecithin, silica, sucralose, sunflower lecithin, xanthan gum, xylitol
When it comes to identifying food additives, go with your gut. 😉 As a rule of thumb, they are the ingredients that you cannot pronounce. Food additives are not the only thing to look out for when buying protein powder, however. There are several other ingredients that can upset your stomach.

Protein Matrix Comprised of (Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Protein Isolate, Calcium Caseinate, Micellar Casein, Milk Protein Isolate, Egg Albumen, Glutamine Peptides), Polydextrose, Sunflower Creamer (Sunflower Oil, Corn Syrup Solids, Sodium Caseinate, Mono- and Diglycerides, Dipotassium Phosphate, Tricalcium Phosphate, Soy Lecithin, Tocopherols), Natural and Artificial Flavor, MCT Powder (Medium Chain Triglycerides, Nonfat Dry Milk, Disodium Phosphate, Silicon Dioxide), Lecithin, Cellulose Gum, Salt, Yellow 5, Sucralose, Acesulfame Potassium, Papain, Bromelain
*This is the actual ingredient list of one of the best-selling protein powders in the United States.
2. Our mocha egg white protein powder is dairy-free.
Our mocha protein powder is dairy-free. Most protein powders are made with dairy-based proteins. Dairy-based proteins like whey and casein, which are byproducts of cheese and yogurt production, are known to cause digestive issues, especially for people with lactose intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Over one in three Americans are lactose intolerant, and the prevalence of IBS is somewhere between 10 and 15 percent in the United States. It follows that you may be lactose intolerant or have IBS and not even know it. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a poorly understood condition, and it is unclear why dairy triggers symptoms. Lactose intolerance, on the other hand, is clearly understood. People with lactose intolerance are unable to fully digest lactose, the sugar in dairy. As you just learned, partially digested food feeds the bacteria in your gut, which produce gas.
3. Our mocha egg white protein powder is made with real foods.
Most protein powders, on the contrary, are made with protein concentrates and/or isolates, foods stripped of everything but the protein. They are listed on the ingredient list as “pea protein” and “whey protein” as opposed to “peas” and “whey.” I will not go into the details, but protein concentrates and isolates undergo heavy mechanical and chemical processing before becoming protein powder. Sometimes, manufacturers use chemical solvents like hexane to isolate (separate) the protein from the food. This means that what you end up putting into your body looks nothing like real food.
If you think about it, your gut was designed to digest naturally occurring foods, not laboratory formulated imitations, so if you feed it anything but real food, it might get upset. The long term implications of eating processed foods are still not well understood, but more and more research is finding that it can alter the composition of your gut microbiota, and lead to permanent damage to the gut microbiome. It is therefore in your best interest to avoid protein powders made with protein concentrates and isolates.
Instead of protein concentrates or isolates, we use egg whites. Egg whites are simply pasteurized and dried before becoming protein powder. Unless you have a sensitivity or allergy to eggs, egg white protein is the best protein for your gut. Egg whites are low in fiber, low-FODMAP, naturally alkaline, and have the highest protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS) of any whole food. Our customers have experienced fewer digestive issues with egg white protein than with any other type of protein.

FAQ
Protein powder is, to put it simply, a powdered version of high protein foods. The main dietary protein source in our mocha protein powder is egg whites, the clear liquid that surrounds the yellow yolk of an egg. Egg whites are naturally high in protein, so all we have to do is pasteurize and dry them to make mocha egg white protein powder. Drying involves spraying liquid egg whites into a chamber through which hot air is passing. This process removes almost all of the moisture, leaving behind a fine white powder, which we flavor with coconut, cocoa, coffee, and monk fruit.
Mocha protein powder is first and foremost a convenient way to increase your protein intake and meet your dietary protein needs. Depending on what your diet looks like, increasing your protein intake can also help you gain weight or lose weight. Basically, if adding mocha egg white protein powder to your diet helps you achieve and maintain a calorie deficit, you will lose weight, and if it helps you achieve and maintain a calorie surplus, you will gain weight. Check out our pages on weight gain and weight loss to learn more.
6 tablespoons of mocha protein powder can be mixed with 1-2 cups of cold milk or water to make a protein shake. It can also be added to smoothies, oatmeal, and recipes for an easy protein boost. If you choose to make a protein shake, use a blender or shaker bottle. Unlike other companies, we do not use food additives to help our mocha egg white protein powder dissolve.
The best time to add mocha protein powder to your diet is in the morning. Eating lots of protein breakfast will keep you full until lunch, discourage overeating, and reduce snacking later in the day. Higher protein intake at breakfast is also associated with higher total daily protein intake. In other words, a high protein breakfast, despite its satiating effects, allows you to maximize the amount of protein that you consume over the course of the day. That said, you can use mocha egg white protein any time to day to boost your protein intake.
Whereas many mocha protein powders are manufactured overseas, our mocha egg white protein powder is handmade in Plymouth, Massachusetts in a GFSI-Certified facility inspected by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Massachusetts Board of Health.

Wen –
Finally a protein powder that does not make me gassy. I have been using this every day for months and absolutely love it!
Ashley –
I have struggled with gut and digestive health since I was very young. In my early 20s I got into fitness and weight lifting, so buying protein powders was one of the first things I started doing. Over the years I bought many, they all made me sick. I quit drinking them for several years until I tried Drink Wholesome, I use both the protein and meal replacement never once had a stomach ache! My only critique is that they are a bit hard to mix if you don’t use a blender.
Anthony Gesick –
This protein powder saved my life. It’s one of the only things that I can eat these days, and I am so grateful. drink wholesome helped me gain some weight and recover from a what has been a serious and scary flare-up. I would recommend it to anyone with IBD.
Matthew Szeto –
have heart burn from other products, this gives NONE! and TASTES GOOD
Linda Cook –
Great product. I have IBS and this product is best for me.
Kris –
I ordered 2 samples, mocha being one of them. The taste is great (I even added a banana). I have no bloating and I don’t feel awful after drinking it! This is the first protein powder that has made me feel great after drinking it and kept me so full for hours! Already ordered 2 bags because I know i will be having a shake every morning!
Shawn Davis –
Love, love, love Mocha and Drink Wholesome! I have Crohn’s disease and am in a bad flare. Surgery is planned but over a month away and I have to avoid food like chicken, steak, fish…it’s a long list of no’s. Nutritionist recommended protein drinks and gave me a competitor’s to try. Its second ingredient is agave nectar, which put my gut in a clamp after two sips. I feel lucky to have found Drink Wholesome because it goes in almost anything on my yes list, including Cream of Wheat and lactose free mild. Does not hurt my gut at all. Because it includes cocoa and coffee I’ve learned to adjust how much I use or drink less coffee. I tend to add the powder in the AM, too, because later does keep me up just like a late coffee would. This does not feel like a hardship at all. I’m looking forward to trying Vanilla. (Can’t do vegan one because of the chickpeas, and I don’t like chocolate). I’ll probably mix Vanilla with Mocha, too, to see how that tastes.
I also want to give a shout-out to the humans, who quickly answer every single email I send with questions like, “Can I put it in hot cereal?” I feel supported. I feel I’m getting wholesome protein in there. I feel I can do this whenever needed, including as I recover from surgery down the road. I feel happy to be a customer of a small company that’s doing wonderful things in a big way.
Grace Clark –
Honestly the best tasting protein powder I’ve had. Digests well too. My only concern is the amount of caffeine, which is not listed?? I assume it’s pretty low because I don’t notice anything.
Mackenzie –
If you have stomach issues with protein powder, you’ve got to try this. I’ve been hunting for a protein powder that doesn’t upset my stomach, and I’m so happy I found this is the one! Zero issues so far. That it tastes good is an added bonus.
Melinda –
I think I already left a review, but I like it so much I might as well leave another. The new mocha recipe is better than the old one, which is saying a lot because the first one was great. I make my Drink Wholesome shake at least once a day (sometimes twice!). It fills me right up, and I love knowing that I’m eating real foods! I don’t notice any caffeine, and you would never know there are eggs in it.
Kelsey Bauer –
I can’t get over how clean this protein powder is. Best ingredients I’ve been. The taste is good. It has a really strong flavor, and I prefer something more tame, but it does the trick. The best part is that is does not upset my stomach at all. Can’t wait to try the other flavors.
Ivan Cornish –
The taste is great. I mix it with milk and water every morning, sometimes with cold coffee when I want more caffeine. It has been a great addition to my daily breakfast. I feel like it helps with a quicker recovery. Definitely my favorite flavor.
Shay –
Really good! Not overly thick or hard to mix like other powders, good for any time of day. No bloating or feeling overly full after drinking it, and tasted great to top it off. Very impressed!
Sujin Brown –
I’m addicted to the mocha flavor. It’s just what I want in the mornings. It’s a bit too sweet for my liking, so I dilute it any adding more liquid. The sweetness is more pronounced when you mix it with water, so I recommend using milk. Definitely a great product, just a tad too sweet.
Joan Abbott –
I love the mocha. It’s flavorful and blends well with my Flaxmilk. Drink Wholesome is helping me transition back into a healthy and clean lifestyle. I love to support local businesses and this is one that I am invested in!
David Figueroa-Ortiz –
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was not expecting it to taste like the organic chocolate milk I get my young daughter. It is fantastic. I will be switching from ON to Drink Wholesome.
John –
Glad to support a NH business! Got this for my son who loves it.
Brian –
This has been an amazing addition to my breakfast. It’s a bit too sweet for me, but I just add more almond milk. I barely notice the caffeine, but you can’t miss the flavor. It’s truly good. The ingredients also kick ass.
Rebekah Zeiba –
So many protein powders can have you wondering exactly what the flavor is. With this one, you can actually taste the mocha goodness. It tastes like you’re having a treat, and I love that it’s not made with chemicals, fillers, or artificial sweeteners.
Julia –
I mix it with my iced coffee in the mornings. It’s excellent. I find that it has a bit of fruity aftertaste, but it doesn’t bother me much. I assume there is some caffeine, but I don’t notice it.
Aidan Stokes –
The mocha is great. It’s a slightly too sweet for me with just water. I do like it though, especially on hot afternoons after I workout. So many protein powders mess with my stomach, but not this one.
Rachel –
When blended with ice and almond milk, the mocha flavor is divine. I actually look forward to drinking it every day. It is also very easy on the stomach.
Brad –
Protein mix is great! I always have a spoon of the mix I buy so I can see what it really tastes like. 9 out of 10 times the mixes are AWFUL! I tasted DW and it was actually good. I use whole milk with mine and use a blender, best mix I’ve ever had. OUTSTANDING customer service as well.
Guy –
So tasty, I love to mix this with milk and coffee for a quick out-the-door breakfast (mix the milk first so you don’t cook the egg whites, then add the coffee). A scoop of vanilla ice cream, drinkwholesome, and milk makes for a great milkshakes too.
Jenny –
I have been blending the mocha flavor with oat milk and ice as a snack in the afternoons. It is freaking delicious! I swear it’s almost as good as a milk shake. The are a few too many carbs for my liking, but they definitely help with the taste.
Mary –
I just got my free samples, and I like them. Although I did not love the flavors, I’m a vanilla gal, they were very smooth and creamy. I am mostly writing this review because when I called to ask a question about the serving suggestion, someone actually answered my call! Great customer service for a small business, especially during COIVD-19! He answered my questions, and told me that a vanilla flavor will be coming soon! Thanks!
Tim Burke –
Drink Wholesome is incredible. I have been looking for a recovery product like this for years. Talk about a clean label! I’m so impressed by the taste too.
Sarah V –
I blend it with ice and almond milk, and it is very filling. Helps stop me from snacking throughout the day. The taste is great, and it mixes perfectly in my blender. Yay for no additives!
Jim Houseman –
I’m a big mountain biker, and this stuff is perfect for after long rides. I love that it’s not a marketed as a diet product. Just real food, for real people. Nice.
William –
When mixed with oat milk, the mocha flavor is insanely good. It is also very filling. Kudos.
Jeff –
I will buy this again! It is really creamy, and the flavor is excellent. You definitely have to use a blender bottle to mix it.
Carol –
It’s a bit too sweet as my eating regimen has NO sugar (other than the natural sugar of fruit), and it doesn’t dissolve very well so I end up drinking somewhat clumpy stuff. (I shake it in a jar). But otherwise it’s fine.
Jasmine –
I look forward to working out so that I can have my drink wholesome! It is tastes delicious when mixed with soy milk. Thanks for such a great product! I hear there is vegan protein powder coming soon! Can’t wait!
Sue McKevitt –
Hi, I echo much of what has been said before about great taste. Looking forward to ordering the vanilla. I drink it with coconut milk and its a bit thick with the 1:3 ratio. I might try it with water. I have to use a blender to be sure it all gets processed without lumps. Nice feeling of satisfying fullness without any bloat. My body feels happy receiving it. I’m passing the info on to my daughter in California. Very cool!! Thanks guys!!
Henry –
Thank you thank you thank you. This tastes great, mixes well, and does not make me run to the bathroom like most protein powders. I will be ordering again!
Kimberly Valpey –
Deeeeeeelicious! The drink is easy to blend, tastes great and renews my energy for the long hikes with my dog. It’s great to see start up companies with a successful product that is actually “good” for you!!!
Kevin James –
I got a pouch for my wife, and drank most it myself. It is really good! Fast shipping too,
Kathy McGonagle –
All around great product. The flavor is superb. You have to shake hard for it to mix, but it does mix well!
Rachel O’Sullivan –
I work out just to drink this stuff. It is incredible.
Nick G –
The mocha flavor is legit so good. I have it every morning and it keeps me full until lunch. It has a good consistency and no aftertaste.
Jim –
Not chalky or gritty. I wish there were more servings in a bag.
Jared –
Probably the best tasting protein powder I have tried yet. The coffee really comes through. I prefer it with milk because it’s a little too sweet with water. No scoop?
Jeremy Hess –
Non artificial sweeteners or stevia. Yay! I’ve been looking for a protein powder like this for years.
Josh H –

So far so good. Does not cause bloating or gas. Very satiating too.

I love everything about drink wholesome. The packaging, the ingredients, the taste. You can’t beat it. I have been blending it with water, and it is so good. Very smooth and creamy (even with water).
Henry Kane –
Too many carbs for me, but overall really good. The packaging is great.
Jennifer –
I love it, the simplicity most of all. I mix it with water and it hits the spot.
Charlie Thompson –
This is my new favorite drink. I started putting warm water with one scoop and it tastes like a mocha espresso. Unreal morning post workout drink!
Allie M. –
I absolutely love the ingredients and it tastes great! Does not mix as well I would like.
Laura Fu –
I have been looking for a protein powder like this for a really long time. I am so impressed by the ingredients, and the taste. It has a similar aftertaste to coffee, with a hint of coconut. I mix it with almond milk.
Samuel Ellison –
I’ve tried many highly reviewed and acclaimed protein powders over the years but they all taste roughly the same: a sickly sweet, quasi-chemical flavor. Drink Wholesome’s Mocha flavor doesn’t and is, without exaggeration, the best tasting powder I’ve tried. I drink it mixed with water. It tastes as natural as it’s advertised. I particularly enjoy the note of coffee. I’m grateful I gave a new powder a try and I look forward to sampling more flavors by this brand.
Anna –
Great product! I blend it with coffee. Does not upset my stomach like some other protein powders I’ve tried. I will be ordering again!
Michael –
Just received my first order. Fast shipping. The ingredient list is incredible! So simple. It mixes surprisingly well and you can really taste the coffee and coconut. So far I am a big fan.
Matt Stephana –
This is the BEST protein powder I’ve ever had. I’ve tried many brands, and this has by far the best flavor, and with no additives! I ordered the mocha, and can’t wait to try the pb coconut!
Elizabeth Valentine –
Love the ingredients. Pricey, but worth it in my opinion.
Joe –
Good for IBS.
Shelby –
Good flavor and no aftertaste. I use it as a meal replacement and feel full for hours! It blends well too. I use regular milk and my husband uses almond milk. I will 100% be recommending this to family and friends.
Matt Clark –
This is the BEST protein powder I’ve ever had. I’ve tried many different brands, and this is by far the tastiest. You can taste the coconut, but I like it. Subtle coffee flavor, not too sweet, mixes well. If there is any caffeine, I don’t notice it.
Sarah –
Great taste. I love that there are no additives!!! Definitely will be back for more.
