Is protein powder good for women?
For the longest time, the protein supplement industry was dominated by hypermasculine branding. It was all about bulking and building muscle. Bariatric surgery patients use it as part of the healing process. Vegans and vegetarians use it to meet their daily protein goals. The list goes on and on. In an attempt to appeal to a broader audience, the protein supplement industry neglected the less “sexy” uses of its products. As a result, many people think of protein powder as something used exclusively by bodybuilders and swimsuit models. This is too bad, because protein powder is for everyone.
The bodybuilding/weight loss duality is also problematic because it promotes unrealistic beauty standards. It encourages people to model themselves after ideals, and suggests that protein supplements are the best way to achieve the “perfect “ body. This could not be farther from the truth. Protein powder alone will not give you six pack abs, sorry. Anyone who tells you otherwise is probably just trying to sell you something. Believing that protein supplements are the secret to bigger biceps or a smaller waistline is a surefire path to disappointment;. Those who turn to supplements for immediate results are often the same people who find themselves grappling with low self-esteem and eating disorders. Protein powder can help you achieve your fitness goals, but not overnight, and not without healthy diet and exercise habits.
Again, protein powder is for everyone, including women. That said, in order to get the most out of it, you have to be honest with yourself about what it is, and what it is not. Protein powder is not a magic bullet, it is just food. You should not expect it to do anything more for you than normal food. Moreover, it is important to understand that any type of protein powder can help you meet your protein goals, but that not all protein powders are good for you.

There are two types of protein supplements: ready-to-drink (store-bought) protein shakes, and protein shakes made with protein powder. In order to make a women’s protein shake with protein powder, you have to mix the powder with milk or water. This requires a blender or a shaker bottle, and a little extra time and effort. Some people prefer ready-to-drink protein shakes because they are more convenient, but if they knew what they were drinking, they would probably feel sick to their stomach.
Ready-to-drink protein shakes are full of emulsifiers, stabilizers, thickeners, sweeteners, and flavors. Ingredients like these improve characteristics like taste, texture, and shelf stability, but can cause uncomfortable side effects and long-term gut damage (more about this soon). This is why I recommend that you make your own women’s protein shakes with protein powder. That said, not all protein powders are created equal, and many contain the same additives found in ready-to-drink protein shakes!

Although not necessarily bad for you in small quantities, additives can add up quickly (especially if you drink a protein shake every day) and cause gastrointestinal (GI) side effects like bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas, and stomach pain. This is because food additives are hard to digest, and sit in your gut for longer than food should, which gives your gut bacteria more time to eat. Many protein powders are made with whey and casein, which are byproducts of cheese and yogurt production, and known to cause digestive issues, especially for people with lactose intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). If you think about it, your gut was designed to digest naturally occurring foods, not laboratory formulated imitations, so if you feed it anything but real food, it might get upset.
