What are gums?
If you have ever read the label of a plant-based milk alternative or protein powder, you have probably noticed gums. You may have also wondered what they are doing in your food, and if you should be eating them.
Gums are food additives used to thicken, stabilize, emulsify, and improve the texture of processed foods like protein. They are typically derived from plants, but undergo heavy processing. Some common examples include guar gum and xanthan gum. It is also common to see a gum blend in protein powder.
Gums are generally considered safe for human consumption by the FDA, but many people may have allergies or sensitivities to them. One of the most common side effects of gums is digestive issues like bloating, gas, and diarrhea.

Most protein powders are made with protein concentrates and isolates, foods stripped of everything but the protein. Many protein powders are made with whey and casein, which are byproducts of cheese and yogurt production, and known to cause digestive issues.
