Why should you add protein powder to oatmeal? 


There is no better way to start your day than with a bowl of high protein oatmeal. Oats are among the healthiest grains on earth, and loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. Numerous studies have shown that oats and oatmeal have many health benefits including weight loss, lower blood sugar, and reduced risk of heart disease. What is not to love?

If oatmeal has one shortcoming, however, it is that it is not high in protein. This is where mixing oats with protein powder comes in. Adding protein powder to oatmeal is the perfect way to supercharge your breakfast. What are other variations that combine oatmeal and protein powder? 


If you’re tired of a hum drum bowl of oatmeal in the morning, we’ve developed a few other recipes to spice things up! For example, you might be interested in trying our overnight oats recipe which is an easy-to-assemble breakfast that can be made the night before.

We like this for days when we know we’ll be tired and rushed in the morning and the last thing we want to think about is cooking. Bonus this is also easily portable and the chia seeds infuse extra fiber into your day.

Another similar recipe is our protein baked oats. This feels filling and indulgent, yet uses very health, nutritious ingredients. This breakfast has the added advantage of feeding up to four people. If you have a family or overnight guests, whip up the ingredients at night, let it rest in the fridge and pop into the oven in the morning. You’ll wonder why you didn’t make this sooner!

Regardless of how you prepare them, you’re doing yourself a service by combining oats and protein in the morning (or any time of day, really!).

Why drink wholesome?


This recipe was made with drink wholesome vanilla protein powder, which is the best protein powder for oatmeal for two reasons.

First of all, our vanilla protein powders are made with whole food protein sources, not protein concentrates and isolates like. Concentrates and isolates, which are the main ingredient in nearly every other protein powder, have been stripped of everything but the protein. They therefore taste like chalk! 

Second, our vanilla protein powders are sweetened with monk fruit or maple sugar. Most other protein powders are sweetened with sugar substitutes like sucralose and stevia, which activate bitter taste receptors

In short, if you do not want your oatmeal to have a chalky or bitter aftertaste, you have come to the right place. Now without further ado, here is the best protein oatmeal recipe.

Ingredients: 

-1 cup almond milk

-½ cup old fashioned rolled oats

-½ cup drink wholesome vanilla protein powder 

-1 tbsp nut butter (optional)

Instructions: 

Place the rolled oats and milk of choice in a medium saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat while continuously stirring. Stirring continuously will prevent your oatmeal from burning and sticking to the bottom of the pan. Once your oatmeal is boiling, reduce to low heat and continue to stir for 5 minutes, or until oats have thickened but still retain a good bit of moisture. Remove from heat and let sit for one minute. Then, stir in the vanilla protein and serve warm with toppings like blueberries or nut butter. 

Is this protein powder oatmeal vegan?

If you are on a plant-based diet, do not despair. Simply use our vegan vanilla protein powder. The main source of protein is California almonds!

What kind of toppings go well with protein oatmeal?

In addition to berries and nut butter, you can also add in dried fruit, yogurt (if you’re not vegan), or even chocolate chips if you’re extra hungry! 

Can you make this protein powder oatmeal recipe with other flavors of protein powder?

This recipe is for vanilla protein powder oatmeal, which is my favorite. You can use other flavors of protein powder if you like, though! I have also made this with unflavored protein powder and peanut butter protein powder
