3 reasons why drink wholesome is easy to digest

1. drink wholesome is additive-free. Most protein powders are full of food additives. Although they are not necessarily bad for you in small quantities, food additives can add up quickly, especially if you drink a protein shake every day. At higher quantities, food additives can cause GI side effects.
Many food additives are hard to digest. As a result, they sit in your gut for longer than they should. This gives the bacteria that live there time to eat the partially digested food. As they eat, these gut bacteria produce gas, which can cause bloating, cramps, and nausea.
Gas also slows colonic transit (the amount of time it takes food to travel through the colon). This can lead to constipation. In the long term, food additives can disrupt regulatory pathways in the intestine, which can result in the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and systemic inflammatory disorders.
Keep an eye out for artificial sweeteners too. Artificial sweeteners can alter the composition of your gut microbiota (the collection of microorganisms that help you digest food). This can lead to serious GI problems and widespread inflammation.
Artificial sweeteners, especially sugar alcohols like xylitol, can also cause diarrhea because they draw water into your gut. Now you have something to blame for those post-protein shake trips to the bathroom. Finally, artificial sweeteners are poorly absorbed by the gut. This means that they feed your hungry gut bacteria.
Here is a list of the most common food additives in protein powder:
acacia gum, acesulfame potassium, artificial flavors, aspartame, carrageenan, cellulose gum, dextrin, dextrose, erythritol, gellan gum, guar gum, gum arabic, inulin, locust bean gum, “natural” flavors*, maltodextrin, rice syrup solids, soy lecithin, silica, sucralose, sunflower lecithin, xanthan gum, xylitol
When it comes to identifying food additives, go with your gut. As a rule of thumb, they are the ingredients that you cannot pronounce.
our ingredients:
chickpeas, coconut, vanilla, monk fruit
the alternative:
Protein Matrix Comprised of (Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Protein Isolate, Calcium Caseinate, Micellar Casein, Milk Protein Isolate, Egg Albumen, Glutamine Peptides), Polydextrose, Sunflower Creamer (Sunflower Oil, Corn Syrup Solids, Sodium Caseinate, Mono- and Diglycerides, Dipotassium Phosphate, Tricalcium Phosphate, Soy Lecithin, Tocopherols), Natural and Artificial Flavor, MCT Powder (Medium Chain Triglycerides, Nonfat Dry Milk, Disodium Phosphate, Silicon Dioxide), Lecithin, Cellulose Gum, Salt, Yellow 5, Sucralose, Acesulfame Potassium, Papain, Bromelain
*This is the actual ingredient list of one of the best-selling protein powders in the United States.
2. drink wholesome is dairy-free. Dairy-based proteins like whey and casein are byproducts of cheese and yogurt production. They are known to cause digestive issues, especially for people with lactose intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Over one in three Americans are lactose intolerant, and the prevalence of IBS is somewhere between 10 and 15 percent in the United States. It follows that you may be lactose intolerant or have IBS and not even know it.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a poorly understood condition, and it is unclear why dairy triggers symptoms. Lactose intolerance, on the other hand, is clearly understood. People with lactose intolerance are unable to fully digest lactose, the sugar in dairy. As you just learned, partially digested food feeds the bacteria in your gut, which produce gas.
3. drink wholesome is minimally processed. Most protein powders, on the contrary, are made with protein concentrates and isolates, foods chemically or mechanically stripped of everything but the protein. They are listed on the ingredient list as “pea protein,” for example, as opposed to “peas.” Although there is no evidence that protein isolates and concentrates are bad for your gut, it is safe to say that real foods are better. Your gut always prefers the real thing, not some heavily-processed imitation.
Instead of protein concentrates or isolates, we use chickpeas. Chickpeas are simply dried and ground before becoming protein powder. We like chickpeas because, compared to other plant protein sources, they are high in soluble fiber. Unlike insoluble fiber, which can have a laxative effect, soluble fiber increases in size as it moves through your digestive tract. This can help make your bowel movements easier and more regular.

This is the best and only protein power I have found that doesn’t upset my stomach. My sister in Boston shipped me some, but I need more and she is out of the country! I’ll keep my eye on the page and hopefully soon will ship out to us here in Canada!

Your protein powder has been a life changer for me. After being diagnosed with IBS it’s been a struggle to find a non whey based protein powder that worked for me and I love your products. I have been having trouble with the zipper on your bag though. It is really hard to close, and I ended up just putting the powder in a ziplock bag.
Nijole Mead –
I have gastritis(using it i don’t have any stomach problems), I’m glad I found you, this is a real product thank you so so much.
Diane Sloane –
Love your protein powder. Thanks for making such a great product! 🙂
Molly Rae –
Not a vegan, but I like this vanilla flavor better than the one with egg whites.
Jack –
I’m not a huge fan of protein powders, but my doctor tells me I need them to keep on weight. I can’t stomach a lot of things, so she recommended that I try this one. Tastes alright (I just mix it with water) and easy to digest, so I’ll probably get a monthly subscription.
Vera B –
Good for people with IBD. Excellent customer service too. Thanks!
Duke White –
The vanilla flavor is not very pronounced, and it does have a slight earthy aftertaste. You can see the ground vanilla beans, which is nice – this is the first time I’ve had a protein powder that actually uses real vanilla! Overall good vegan protein powder. Definitely worth giving a try.
Ollie –
Finally a protein powder that works for me! I have gastritis and was having a hard time finding a protein powder that didn’t cause stomach pain. I tried probably a dozen brands before my dietician recommended drink wholesome. It works. Tastes damn good too.
Gail –
I love this protein drink! I’ve tried so many different ones and they all upset my stomach, not this one! Blends beautifully, tastes great and no bloating and no horrible tummy sounds at work! Thank you for making an simple and safe drink!
Dianne –
This is the only protein powder I’ve tried that doesn’t cause bloating. Mixes surprisingly well and tastes very good for plant-based. I only wish it came in bigger bags.
David –
This doesn’t taste chalky or gritty, at all. Smooth consistency, sweet but not too sweet. I’d never tried a chickpea protein powder before and I like it much more than pea protein. It doesn’t have that plant aftertaste. Definitely recommend.
Samantha –
This protein powder has been a godsend. I really need to get more protein in my diet but I couldn’t not find one that didn’t upset my stomach. I found Drink Wholesome online and tried some samples. I liked the this one so I ordered two bags and I’m so happy. It tastes good and I have had ZERO stomach pain. Thank you.
Naomi –
I was desperate for a safe protein powder. I found this one and really like it! It doesn’t cause stomach pain (has been an issue for me in the past). It’s definitely sweet with more maple than vanilla flavor in my option.
Katharine –
This new vegan flavor is unreal. I really liked the old peanut butter chocolate flavor, but this one is even better. By far the best vegan protein powder I’ve had. It’s has the perfect amount of sweetness if you mix it with dairy-free milk. The vanilla is subtle. The best part is that it makes me feel good. No bloating at all! Yay for good ingredients.
